The short answer

Healthybaby diapers are disposable diapers made with plant-derived materials and an outer cover enhanced with 15% organic cotton. They are the first and only diaper to earn the EWG VERIFIED® mark, which means they are made without more than 2,800 chemicals and materials the Environmental Working Group (EWG) flags as concerning, and the brand discloses every material it uses. They cost more than mainstream brands, roughly $0.50 to $0.70 per diaper depending on size and whether you subscribe, so they make the most sense for parents who prioritize ingredient transparency and sensitive skin.

What does “EWG Verified” actually mean?

The Environmental Working Group is a nonprofit that sets its own ingredient-safety and transparency standards. To earn the EWG VERIFIED® mark, a product must avoid every ingredient on EWG’s restricted lists, disclose all of its materials, and have those materials checked by third-party labs. For diapers, that testing covers things like volatile organic compounds (VOCs), pesticide residues and heavy metals.

It is a high bar. Of the tens of thousands of products screened against EWG’s standards, only a few thousand have earned the mark, and Healthybaby’s is the only diaper among them. Healthybaby also prints its full materials list on every pack.

What it does not mean: EWG Verified is a private certification, not a government or medical approval. There is no strong clinical evidence that mainstream disposable diapers harm healthy babies in normal use. The value of the mark is transparency and the removal of ingredients some families prefer to avoid, not a proven health benefit.

What is a Healthybaby diaper made of?

  • Outer cover: a blend that includes 15% organic cotton for softness. The rest of the cover is conventional synthetic material, as in nearly every disposable diaper.
  • Absorbent core: fluffy wood pulp from FSC-certified forests, processed Totally Chlorine Free, combined with super-absorbent polymer (SAP) to lock away moisture.
  • Channels: the brand’s channel system spreads liquid through the core, which it says helps keep skin drier and supports overnight leak protection.
  • Packaging: paper-based rather than plastic.

Independent reviewers note that, like every disposable diaper on the market, Healthybaby still contains some plastic components. The brand says its goal is a fully plastic-free diaper and offsets its plastic footprint in the meantime.

How do Healthybaby diapers perform?

Parents generally describe them as soft, thin and breathable, with good overnight performance once the size is right. Two practical notes:

  1. Sizing matters. Healthybaby’s own support team says most leaks come from the wrong size. If you see leaks, try sizing up before switching brands.
  2. No wetness indicator. Because the chemical indicator stripe is left out, you will check the diaper by feel or by look rather than by color change.

Are Healthybaby diapers good for sensitive skin and diaper rash?

Fragrance-free, lotion-free and dye-free diapers are a sensible choice for babies with sensitive skin or eczema, and Healthybaby says its products go through patch testing for irritation under dermatologist supervision. But no diaper prevents diaper rash on its own. Pediatric guidance is consistent: rash happens with both cloth and disposable diapers, and the biggest factor is how long the skin stays wet or soiled.

Pediatrician-recommended habits that matter more than brand:

  • Change wet or soiled diapers promptly, including overnight if stool is present.
  • Clean gently with water or fragrance-free, alcohol-free wipes, and let the skin dry fully before the next diaper.
  • Give your baby some diaper-free time so the skin can air out.
  • Use a barrier cream with zinc oxide or petroleum jelly at the first sign of redness.
  • Expect more rash when babies start solids, have diarrhea, or are on antibiotics, and change more often during those times.

Call your pediatrician if a rash lasts more than three to four days despite good care, keeps coming back, has blisters, open sores, pus or bright red spots spreading into skin folds (which can mean a yeast or bacterial infection), or comes with fever.

Sensitive skin? Try a diaper made without fragrance, lotions or dyes.

OptionBest forTrade-off
HealthybabyMaximum ingredient transparency and a third-party certificationPremium price; no wetness indicator
Other “clean” brandsFragrance- and chlorine-free at a lower priceLess material disclosure; no EWG Verified diaper
Mainstream brandsLowest cost, wide availability, wetness indicatorsSome contain fragrance, lotions or dyes
Cloth diapersLong-term savings and less wasteLaundry time; rash risk is similar if changes are delayed

Who should consider Healthybaby?

  • Parents who want to know exactly what touches their baby’s skin 24/7.
  • Babies with sensitive skin who react to fragranced or lotioned diapers.
  • Families who value sustainability features like FSC pulp, paper packaging and carbon-neutral manufacturing.
  • Gift givers and registry builders looking for a premium, newborn-friendly diaper.

If budget is tight, a fragrance-free mainstream diaper changed often is a perfectly safe choice. Diaper habits matter more than diaper brand.

Frequently asked questions

Are Healthybaby diapers non-toxic?

Healthybaby diapers are EWG Verified, meaning they are made without 2,800+ chemicals and materials the Environmental Working Group considers concerning and have been third-party tested for VOCs, pesticides and heavy metals. “Non-toxic” is a marketing term, not a regulated one, but Healthybaby offers one of the most transparent and tested ingredient profiles of any disposable diaper.

Are Healthybaby diapers 100% organic cotton?

No. The outer cover is enhanced with 15% organic cotton. The core is FSC-certified wood pulp and absorbent polymer, and some components are synthetic.

Do Healthybaby diapers have a wetness indicator?

No. The brand leaves out the chemical wetness indicator stripe.

Where are Healthybaby diapers made?

In the European Union, at a carbon-neutral facility powered by renewable energy.

How much do Healthybaby diapers cost?

Roughly $0.50 to $0.70 per diaper, depending on size, pack size and whether you buy a subscription bundle. Prices change, so check the current offer on the Healthybaby site.

Do Healthybaby diapers prevent diaper rash?

No diaper prevents rash by itself. Fragrance- and lotion-free materials may help sensitive skin, but frequent changes, gentle cleaning, drying time and barrier cream are what prevent most diaper rash.

Are Healthybaby diapers good for newborns?

Yes. Healthybaby makes newborn and size 1 diapers, and their fragrance-free, dye-free design suits delicate newborn skin. Check the weight range on the pack, since fit is the main cause of leaks.
